Summer Banquet Honors Awardees
A good time was had by all who attended the 2011 Summer Banquet held at Golden Corral in July. Winners of both the 2011 Scholarship and Out-of-Town Points Contest were announced and food and fellowship were enjoyed.
Courtney Norris was awarded the 2011 College Scholarship. The club voted to increase Courtney's award amount to $500 since there were few eligible applicants this year. Way to go, Courtney! Good luck, study hard and make us all proud!
Carolyn Gregory-Barclay accepted the Out-of-Town Points award for 2011. She accumulated the most points for shows outside the SARBA sponsored shows. Barclay joked when she accepted her plaque, "This is the most expensive award I've ever earned!" Traveling the road with a bunch of buns isn't easy or cheap, but it is rewarding. Best of all, SARBA is well represented when you do. So go show those rabbits this fall.
Time to Renew Membership
It's that time of the year again...membership renewal time. All memberships in the San Antonio Rabbit Breeder's Association are due on October 1. Don't let your membership lapse and miss any important information or other membership benefits such as free web advertising, sweepstakes points contests, and scholarship eligibility.
Suggested Treatment for Rabbit Bloat
As you may have read in your recent issue of Domestic Rabbits published by ARBA, there is suspected to be a new strain of Coccidiosis that is resistant to currently accepted treatments such as Corid. Others are reporting incidence of Epizootic Rabbit Enteropathy (ERE), which has extremely high mortality rates and can spread through a herd very quickly. Both diseases affect the gut and cause bloat which contributes to rabbit mortality by essentially starving the rabbit.
Corid offers improvement for the ailments if administered at the first signs of illness and proactively to any additional herd members exposed. But, in addition to this, success has been reported among raisers administering Simethicon (active ingredient in Gas-X) in addition to Corid for an extended period of time. It seems that the rabbits are suffering most from bloat which interferes with digestion causing starvation. Young rabbits starting from 6 weeks to 6 months seem to be most affected. Rabbits will tolerate rather high doses of Simethicon well. Adding it to their water is easy and palatable to the rabbits. Choose either baby formula which is flavored like bubblegum or adult formula which usually has a mint flavor. Both are readily available over the counter at the local drug store in generic or name brand.
Donations Needed for Silent Auction & Raffle
The SARBA Fall show is fast approaching and we need your help to make it a success. Items are needed for the Silent Auction and Raffle booth. If you can donate something large or small we will put it to work for the club. Baked goods are always a hit as are collectibles, pedigreed rabbits, and equipment. Our club is known for its great raffle table, so let's keep it up!
Most importantly, make sure you are at the show to help fellow club members behind the tables and wherever else needed. We will be at the show barn setting up Friday night and everyone is welcome to join in the fun. We sincerely hope everyone brings their show stock to enter in the show. Don't forget to enter early to save $1.00 per head per show. While this new format may be a little scary to cotemplate, we are committed to making it work even better than before. Our Show Secretary, Barbara MacArthur, and Show Superintendant, are excited about its time saving attributes and they need our support to help make it work. Be sure to thank Janie & Mac Keller for their willingness to accept the early entries, too. Imagine if we can be known for being the show that manages entries so well that we get started on time and move through the show so quickly that everyone gets home before dark! Everyone will want to come see that and we will have more and more success in the future.
